Detailed information

Breast cancer surgery has a relatively high wound complication rate due to the fragile nature of the blood
supply to the mastectomy skin. This means the mastectomy skin is particularly susceptible to wound healing
complications, particularly mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN).

Plexaa have developed a device, Bloom43, which delivers preconditioning therapy, where the surgical site
is heated to a „supraphysiological“ level, 43°C, 12-hours before surgery. This improves the blood supply to the
skin thus enhancing its ability to heal. Previous research including an NIHR-funded study by our lead applicant
(preHEAT RCT-2019) proved this technique to be extremely effective at preventing MSFN; significantly reducing
the need for corrective surgery by 50%; and reducing hospital stays by 2 days.

The innovative features of Bloom43 include:

1. Fully wearable - fits into existing surgical pathways and minimises patient burden
2. Sensor controlled - allows safe, precise preconditioning even for patients who have had radiotherapy so
everyone can benefit.
3. Home use - user centric design means no extra visits to hospital
